Criminal defense built around the charge, evidence and correct Brunswick-area court
Brunswick criminal cases do not all remain in one courthouse. Brunswick Mayor’s Court handles city ordinance violations and qualifying state traffic matters within the authority Ohio law gives a mayor’s court. The City’s Law Department states that a not-guilty plea to a Brunswick criminal complaint results in transfer to Medina Municipal Court for trial. Medina Municipal Court’s official jurisdiction includes the City of Brunswick and covers misdemeanor criminal and traffic cases arising within its territory.
Some charges cannot be decided in Mayor’s Court. Ohio law excludes domestic violence, violating a protection order and specified family-or-household-member violence cases from mayor’s-court jurisdiction. Felony prosecutions belong in Medina County Common Pleas Court, although preliminary proceedings may occur before indictment. The newest summons, transfer notice, indictment and docket determine where the next appearance will occur.
The defense starts with the actual charging document—not a shorthand label such as “assault,” “theft” or “drug charge.” I review each statute or Brunswick ordinance, offense level, alleged mental state, prior record, bond or no-contact conditions and available evidence. If retained, you work directly with me through investigation, discovery, negotiations, supported motions and trial preparation.
Brunswick Mayor’s Court: eligible local charges and traffic cases
A case may begin in Brunswick Mayor’s Court when it involves a Brunswick ordinance or qualifying state traffic offense within the court’s statutory authority. Common matters include speeding and serious traffic citations, qualifying first-offense OVI, misdemeanor theft and other eligible ordinance violations. I verify the precise charge and whether the court may retain it before advising a client.
Medina Municipal Court: Brunswick misdemeanors and transferred cases
Medina Municipal Court’s official geographic jurisdiction includes Brunswick and authorizes it to hear misdemeanor criminal and traffic cases arising there. Brunswick’s published process states that a not-guilty plea to a criminal complaint results in transfer to Medina Municipal Court for trial. Domestic violence and protection-order cases also cannot be finally heard in Mayor’s Court under ORC 1905.01.
Medina County Common Pleas Court: felony defense
Felony charges are prosecuted in Medina County Common Pleas Court. Representation may involve felony theft or receiving stolen property, felonious assault, strangulation, burglary or robbery, drug possession or trafficking, weapons charges, felony OVI, failure to comply, tampering with evidence, child endangering and sex-offense allegations. Every count, specification and alleged enhancement should be reviewed separately.
Brunswick theft, shoplifting and self-checkout allegations
Brunswick Ordinance 642.02 addresses misdemeanor theft. A defense may turn on purpose to deprive, consent, mistake, identification, value, ownership, employee conduct, self-checkout records, receipts, surveillance video or statements. Value and property type can elevate a theft allegation for prosecution under state felony law.
Assault, menacing and self-defense
Person-offense cases may involve conflicting accounts, 911 calls, injuries, photographs, messages, witnesses and claims of self-defense or defense of another. Brunswick Chapter 636 includes assault and menacing provisions, but the relationship between the people involved and the offense charged can determine whether Mayor’s Court has jurisdiction and whether the matter proceeds in Medina Municipal Court instead.
Domestic violence and protection-order allegations
Ohio law prevents a mayor’s court from hearing domestic violence, violating-protection-order and specified family-or-household-member violence cases. These allegations may immediately affect release conditions, residence, contact with family, employment and firearm possession. I review the exact subsection, alleged relationship, prior convictions, protection order, notice, 911 recording, messages, injuries and witness accounts.

OVI and DUI charges in Brunswick
A qualifying OVI may begin in Brunswick Mayor’s Court under Brunswick Ordinance 434.01 or ORC 4511.19. A case outside Mayor’s Court authority may proceed in Medina Municipal Court, and felony OVI is prosecuted in Medina County Common Pleas Court. The separate Brunswick OVI page explains Administrative License Suspension, refusal, field sobriety, video and chemical-test issues in detail.
Drug, search and possession cases
Drug allegations can turn on the reason for a stop, warrant, consent, constructive possession, identification of the substance, laboratory analysis, weight, packaging, phone evidence and alleged intent. Felony degree and potential consequences depend on the substance, amount, conduct and specifications actually charged.
Evidence worth preserving now
Keep every citation, complaint, summons, bond paper, no-contact order and court notice. Preserve photographs, video, messages, receipts, location information and witness details without editing or posting them. Police body-camera video, cruiser video, store surveillance, 911 calls, dispatch records, laboratory material and search-warrant documents may also matter.
Bond, court dates and transfers
Follow every bond and no-contact condition and do not miss the date on the newest court notice unless the court or retained counsel confirms otherwise. When a case transfers, the court, case number and schedule may change; the transfer is procedural and is not a finding of guilt.
Record sealing or expungement after a Brunswick case
A dismissed charge, eligible misdemeanor conviction or eligible felony conviction may qualify for sealing or expungement under different Ohio statutes and waiting periods. Because a Brunswick case may be resolved in Mayor’s Court, Medina Municipal Court or Medina County Common Pleas Court, I first identify the court that entered the final judgment and review the complete record.
